Western Witch's Hat (Hygrocybe singeri)

Western witch's hat (Hygrocybe singeri) is a waxcap mushroom that sports orange tones but blackens with age or when damaged. Its conical cap is can be quite viscid (sticky) when wet. H. acutoconica is similar but does not blacken. H. conica, the name found in most older mushroom field guides, likely does not occur in California.
