Fairy Cup Fungus (Lachnellula calyciformis)

Lachnellula calyciformis is a nivicolous (snowmelt) fungus commonly found on decaying conifer bark in the Sierra Nevada. Though these "fairy cups" are quite tiny (typically 1-2mm in diameter), they are also fairly conspicuous thanks to their vibrant orange color, white peripheral hairs, and their tendency to form large groups. Capitotricha bicolor is very similar, but grows on hardwood.
