Gray Midrib Gall Wasp (Besbicus multipunctatus)

The gray midrib gall wasp (Besbicus multipunctatus, formerly Cynips multipunctata) induces single spherical galls on the undersides of blue oak leaves. The galls are covered with fine, stellate clusters of hairs. Despite the common name, these galls can also be green or peach in color. The clustered gall wasp (Andricus brunneus) produces similar galls, but those ones are smaller and occur in tight groups.
