Flange Gall Wasp (undescribed Cynipidae)
The flange gall wasp (common name by gall expert Ron Russo) is a cynipid wasp which, at the time of this writing, is still scientifically undescribed. It induces galls on the leaves of blue oaks (Quercus douglasii), each of which resembles a sphere atop a star-shaped base. These summer-generation galls are finely hairy and only 3-4mm in diameter.
Flange gall induced by undescribed or unknown cynipid wasp, highly detailed close-up of a single gall on blue oak (Quercus douglasii). Stacked and stitched micro panorama of 306 exposures at 7.5x lifesize. Vacaville, Solano County, California, USA.
