Fragile Russula (Russula fragilis)

Fragile russula (Russula fragilis) is a widespread mushroom species found throughout North America and beyond. The color of the cap is highly variable, but almost always contains some shade of purple with a distinctively darker disc (central portion of the cap) and paler margin. When wet, the cap is viscid, but to a much lesser extant than the slimy purple-stemmed cort (Cortinarius seidliae). This beautiful species has a close association with conifers and is often found in damp, mossy habitats.
