Slimy Purple-Stemmed Cort (Cortinarius seidliae)

The slimy purple-stemmed cort (Cortinarius seidliae) is known for its gorgeous chestnut brown cap and violet stalk, both of which are covered in a thick layer of slime when fresh. Cortinarius vanduzerensis is still the name listed in most field guides, but we now know from DNA analysis that C. vanduzerensis does not occur in California. Edibility is unknown, but consumption is not advised since some related species have proven to be deadly poisonous. Also, who could possibly be appetized by something so slimy?!
