Pacific Coralroot (Corallorhiza mertensiana)
Pacific coralroot (Corallorhiza mertensiana) is a mycoheterotrophic orchid which obtains its nutrients from subterranean fungi. This non-photosynthesizing beauty occurs in low-elevation coniferous forests throughout western North America, often in especially shaded areas where there is reduced competition from plants that obtain nutrients through photosynthesis. Additional common names include western coralroot and Mertens's coralroot.
