Milky Way galaxy over Alabama Hills Recreation Area

Situated near the small town of Lone Pine in the eastern Sierra, Alabama Hills Recreation Area is home to many unique geological features. Those who are familiar with the area are no doubt aware of its natural beauty (and its role as the backdrop for many Hollywood movies). However, because of its isolation from the bright lights of the bustling outside world, this special place is also home to some of California's darkest night skies — perfect for observing and photographing the splendor of our very own Milky Way galaxy. In the following pictures, I have juxtaposed the heavens and the earth, with the foreground dimly illuminated with a reddish tint to simulate what stargazers would see while using red headlamps to protect their sensitive night vision.
