Machado Postpile
Machado Postpile is an ancient geological wonder which sits relatively hidden in the Eldorado National Forest, east of Silver Lake. Its unique structure was formed by lava deposits which naturally cracked into massive diabase columns upon cooling. Under ideal conditions, these columns would all be hexagonal, but nature is rarely so well-behaved; numerous 4- and 5-sided columns are readily found, along with other irregularities that provide a fascinating place to explore. This site is often called Machado Postpiles (plural), as there is a second set of pillars just east of the main collection. The name honors Jess Machado, who discovered the site in 1934.
