California Jumping Gall Wasp (Neuroterus saltatorius)
The California jumping gall wasp (Neuroterus saltatorius) induces one of tiniest galls found on various white oaks. At just 1mm across, these oval "specks" hiding on the undersides of leaves are quite easy to miss. These diminutive dwellings fall to the ground in autumn, and at that point the larvae within commence impressive acrobatics that cause the galls to "jump," hence the common name.
