Winter Russula (Russula cremoricolor)

Winter russula (Russula cremoricolor) is a toxic mushroom common to forests in the west coast states. The red form has been known locally as R. silvicola and R. emetica, but DNA research shows that it is actually a mere color variant of R. cremoricolor. The species name, meaning cream-colored, is clearly unfitting for a red-capped mushroom, but it was coined before the others and is therefore the officially recognized scientific name.
