Firerug Inkcap (Coprinellus domesticus)

The firerug inkcap (Coprinellus domesticus) is a widespread mushroom known for the "carpet" of bright orange hairs (hyphae) that are often found at the base of its stem. Sometimes, this feature is missing or obscured. The specific epithet and the alternative common name, domestic inky cap, refer to the fact that this species sometimes appears in damp basements. The granular coating on its grooved cap tends to persist even in age, a feature which helps to distinguish it from the similar mica cap (C. micaceus). C. radians is indistinguishable without microscopy or DNA sequencing.
