Eyelash Cup Fungus (Scutellinia scutellata group)

With their bright orange to red colors and "lashes" that are suitable for cosmetics commercials, eyelash cups are among the world's most beautiful fungi. Scutellinia scutellata has long been the scientific name applied to just about any look-alike, but California is almost definitely home to a number of similar species that can only be differentiated by microscopy or DNA sequencing. Cheilymenia species are very similar, but occur on dung.
