Redwood Sorrel (Oxalis oregana)

Redwood sorrel (Oxalis oregana) is a perennial herb which grows in redwood and Douglas fir forests along the Pacific coast of North America. Its heart-shaped leaves, which are often misidentified as clover, are specially adapted for photosynthesis under the low levels of light which are typical in their shady habitat. Since prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage the sensitive foliage, the leaves have the ability to fold down when the sun's rays shine directly upon them.
