California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)
The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a showy wildflower native to the western US and northern Mexico. Its blossoms are typically orange, though several color variations exist. At the base of the flower is a pink ring, known as the receptacle. The receptacle is a key diagnostic feature that helps to distinguish this species from other poppies. The California poppy is California's state flower.
