Mountain garter snake (Thamnophis elegans elegans)
The mountain garter snake (Thamnophis elegans elegans) is a high elevation subspecies of garter snake (or gartersnake) common throughout the Sierra Nevada. While its venom is sufficiently potent to kill amphibians and other small prey, this snake is not considered to be dangerous to humans.
