Oak apple wasp (Trichoteras vaccinifoliae)
The oak apple wasp (Trichoteras vaccinifoliae, previously Andricus vaccinifoliae) induces galls on huckleberry and canyon live oaks. Each individual gall is about 30mm in diameter, but the cross sections below reveal that the central larval chamber is significantly smaller (~4mm) and suspended by numerous radiating fibers.
