Mushroom Gall Wasp (Heteroecus sanctaeclarae)

The mushroom gall wasp (Heteroecus sanctaeclarae) induces fantastically Tolkienesque galls on huckleberry and canyon live oaks. Once the young cynipid wasp has chewed its way out into the world, an exit hole will adorn the lower portion of the two-part gall. Some might say this whimsical design is more reminiscent of a forest gnome house than a mushroom.
